Prof. J S Rajput, former Director, NCERT, was awarded the pres­tigious Jan Amos Comenius Medal for his outstanding achievements in the fields of educational research and inno­vation by Dr Warren Mellor, Director, UNESCO in New Delhi on 19th August, 2009. Also present on the occasion were Mr. Kreuter Charge d’Affaires, Embassy Czech Republic and Mr. Amit Khare, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The selection of the candidates for the Medal is made by a jury consist­ing of the President of the Interna­tional Bureau of Education (IBE) Council, the Director of the IBE, a representative of UNESCO’s Educa­tion Sector and a representative of
the Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Repub­lic. The decisions of this jury concern­ing the choice of candidate are sub­mitted to the Director-General of UNESCO for approval.


The Jan Amos Comenius Medal, created jointly by the Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Republic and the Direc­tor-General of UNESCO, in 1992, on the occasion of the 400th birth anniversary of Jan Amos Comenius, is intended to reward outstanding achievements carried out in the fields of educational research and innova­tion and exceptional examples of per­sonal devotion to education and the


ideals of UNESCO demons:-; throughout an important part o’ life.

As well as commemorat ‘: spiritual heritage of Jan Amos nius, its principal aim is to pro_ and encourage new initiatives a significant contribution to the :~ opment and renewal of educa::
